IPL 2020 Postponed Due to Coronavirus to start from April 15
Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 has been postponed from March 29 to April 15 as a "precautionary measure" against the coronavirus epidemic, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Friday .
The BCCI's statement follows the announcement made by the Delhi government that it would not allow any sports activity in the national capital due to the health crisis.
Honorary Secretary of BCCI Jay Shah said in a statement
"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend IPL 2020 till 15th April 2020, as a precautionary measure against the ongoing Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) situation. The BCCI is concerned and sensitive about all its stakeholders, and public health in general, and it is taking all necessary steps to ensure that, all people related to IPL including fans have a safe cricketing experience."
BCCI said that the board will work closely with the government and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and all other Central and state departments in this matter.
The decision comes as India suspends visas for all countries till April 15. The foreign players in IPL get Business (sports) visas and full under the 'exempted from government restrictions' category.
Many franchisees unanimously decided to propose 15 April as the tournament's start date.
The IPL was scheduled to begin in Mumbai on 29 March and Delhi's first game was scheduled on 30 March. Prior to Delhi, Karnataka also expressed reluctance to host IPL matches, while Maharashtra has banned the sale of tickets.
